I seek out stories of revelation, of transformation. I create worlds onstage that are powerful with metaphor, yet also feel very close and familiar. I expand on the natural rules of the live theater, I celebrate theatricality rather than seeking to hide it, and I push the improvisational quality of acting, its “liveness,” to its farthest and most unpredictable point.

I am extremely grateful for my individual and idiosyncratic career. As a director in the theater, I create a space to witness the largest stories our culture has to offer. As the audience, we see the whole gorgeous, hideous, intoxicating range of human behavior--real and imagined--and we sit still for it. We cannot stop this particular tragedy from unfolding, nor can we vanish into the happy ending of a comedy. We can only turn and see the elements of that same story in ourselves. As a result, we start to see ourselves with both criticism and compassion. Then a kind miracle happens—we ask more of ourselves as human beings, and we forgive ourselves at the same time.
